Stitches South Update

The folks in Atlanta were really busy working on the Big Sock. Per Karola, another Tempe Yarn'er, who helped monitor the sock in Atlanta, another 7.5 inches (or 61.5K stitches) were added by over 400 knitters. Way to go Stitches South!

Stitches South - BIG Sock

Just went to Stitches South in Atlanta and found an old friend. The BIG Sock was on display and being worked on by lots of folks.

Looks like it has grown 7 inches since it left Tempe Yarn in early January. Our signature Purple yarn, supplied by Skacel, still stands out proudly.

Saying Goodbye to a Friend - the Big Sock

Over the past month, we've had over 200 people knit on the Big Sock as we've added 19 inches to the overall length.

The range of ages of those who knitted on the sock was from 4 years to 80+ (we don't ask ladies their real age).

We had people from California, Colorado, Tennessee, Utah, Texas, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Washington, Kansas, Arkansas, New Mexico, Florida, Kentucky and of course Arizona who knitted on the sock while it was in the shop.

We had several newspapers run stories, plus two televisions stations visited the shop.

The sock became a focal point for discussions, laughs, learning and good old fashion fun! Plus there was sense of pride that we were participating in something bigger than own lives and would be part of a world record.

We want to thank Joanna Ratcliff who started the Big Sock. We also want to thank everyone who worked on the sock before us and those who will continue after us. It has been a blast and really felt great. We also want to send a special thanks to Skacel who donated both needles and yarn.

Goodbye old friend, continue putting one foot in front of the other until you become the biggest sock!

Last Days for the Big Sock

With the start of the new year, it's time for the Big Sock to go to its next home. Saturday will be the last full day that we will have to work on the sock.

Update on the Growth of the Bigsock

When the Bigsock arrived at Tempe Yarn it was 30 inches. Since arriving it has grown another 8 inches. We've had approximately 50 people knit on it so far.

Big Sock Continues to Grow at Tempe Yarn

Progress continues at Tempe Yarn on the Big Sock as we've added 5 inches to the length of the sock over the weekend!

Karin Skacel from Skacel Yarns was in the shop this week to knit on the Big Sock.

While here, Karin Skacel donated ten bags of "Wonderful Wool" to

be used for the Big Sock, plus some great addi Turbo needles.

Big Sock Continues To Grow @ Tempe Yarn & Fiber

Big Sock Is @ Tempe Yarn & Fiber

Arriving with the snowbirds (who we love), the Big Sock continues it's worldwide journey coming to Tempe Yarn & Fiber in Tempe, Arizona.

Here's a picture of it's arrive and the first people starting to knit on it.


Our goal is to add at least a foot to it before it goes to the next shop.

Special thanks to Allari for sticking with getting the sock to our shop.

Stamping a Mark at Rhinebeck 2009

There was much anticipation when the Uncommon Threads Yarn Shop decided to bring the Big Sock to the annual New York Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY. Guesses of how many folks would knit on the Big Sock brought an estimation of 250 people for the whole weekend. The guesses were a teensy bit off... Before the sock left Uncommon Threads in York, PA, it was 17 inches. We guesstimated that 3 inches were done during Rhinebeck, and after the final measurement, 27 rounds were knitted. That means 27 x 1500 = 40500 stitches!!





The lovely Jamie of Zippy Pins supplied 500 buttons for handing out to knitters that worked on the Big Sock. Not only did 500 knitters come by, but another estimated 50-100 knitters participated!





There were a couple of knitting celebrities who popped over to knit on the sock. I happened to snap Melissa Morgan-Oakes looking sly during her time with Big Sock. Another was CAT from Let's Knit Together.





Special thanks go to the folks who donated skeins of yarn to be incorporated in the Big Sock:

• Olebrumm whose beautiful skein from a rare Finnish breed of sheep is being added this week during Stitches East (if not today!).
• Duchess Fibers who are the USA distributors of Punta Yarns. The skein they donated is Merisock Hand Paint in colorway HP71.

The Big Sock's San Diego Visit

We had a great time with the BigSock visit during it's visit to San Diego. People were amazed by the scale of the sock and while most knit for a needle or 2, others spent hours and hours with the sock. It was nice to slow down and visit over the sock during the last month.


It was great to watch knitters pour over the scrap book, admire the work that had been done and then pick their spot, sometimes it was their favorite seat at the table, some picked based on their favorite color. We had knitters of all ages come to knit on the sock.



To wrap up it's time with us at Two Sisters and Ewe we threw the Big Sock Bash on September 18th, 20 knitters came to spend the evening adding as much as we could to the Big Sock.


From our measurements we added 4 inches, and unintentionally a lot of purple (not sure why so much purple, I guess it's just our color).


It was an honor to host The Big Sock on it's visit to San Diego! The BigSock is currently winging it's way to Pennsylvania. Happy Knitting!

The Big Sock was hand delivered to us on Friday by Cheramie! It is so exciting to have it here. The Big Sock arrived just in time for our monthly Ladies Night and San Diego's contributions to the sock began!
